Many cities in North America have introduced laws where safety components need to be installed on all city-owned and city-contracted vehicles that fall into these two categories:
-
Straight Trucks weighing more than 10,000 lbs
-
Semi-trailers having a total weight of more than 26,000 lbs
The ordinance requires that vehicles have:
-
Compliant Side Underride Guards that meet Volpe Standards.
-
Cross-over mirrors, and
-
Blind-spot awareness decals or cameras.
The ordinance is part of the many Vision Zero programs that aims to eliminate serious injuries and traffic fatalities on the city’s roads. The devices are designed to reduce the risk of crashes with pedestrians and cyclists and to prevent crashes from occurring
